Hei Matau are stylized fish hook pendants. According to Maori legend the Polynesian Demi-God Maui fished up the North Island of New Zealand (Te Ika a Maui) with a hook such as this. Hei Matau also represents the importance of fishing to Maori and their connection with the God of the Sea – Tangaroa.
This delicate fish hook necklace is based on the traditional Hei Matau design. There are two korus in the carved into the bottom of the pendant which adds to it’s charm.
